PHOTOVOICE is an engagement and empowerment strategy that uses photography as a tool for social change. It gives any group the opportunity to record, reflect on, and critique personal and community issues in a creative way.
The aim of this project is to motivate participants to be actively involved in decisions that affect their own lives, while decreasing stigma and broadening understanding of their personal struggles. The resulting exhibit, REFOCUSING THE LENS, features the work of five participants who have documented their personal experiences with mental health, eager to represent them to the outside world.
Picking down the sunlight, By Lau
Looking upside down it is a flower; looking right side up it is a lamp. What exactly is it? It depends on the perspective you bring to your view. I value the art of creativity, the creativity of the human brain. Thinking outside the box leads you to be wiser, to gain a wider perspective. Sometimes, a negative situation can appear to be bad but it doesn’t mean that one can’t also find the sweetness in it. I believe that in every sweetness there is bitterness and in every bitterness there is sweetness. Thus, I have learned not to let my difficult feelings overwhelm me when I feel upset. There might be a rainbow after the storm. And that perspective is a gift of my human brain.
